호/ 생활비를 마련하기 위해 생계형 콩쿠르를 치러야 했던 피아니스트 선우예권이 반 클라이번 콩쿠르 우승으로 단 1%의 아쉬움도 남기지 않은 채 콩쿠르를 ‘졸업’했다. 마침내, 그의 시작이다.
새해를 맞이할 때 으레 방송 3사에서 중계되던 보신각의 타종행사를 언제부턴가 찾아보기 힘들어졌다. 방송사의 각종 시상식에 참가한 연예인들의 카운트다운이 그 자리를 메우기 시작한 다음부터다. 2016년 12월 31일, 햇수로는 어느덧 2년이 되어버린 한 해의 마지막 날, 새해 벽두부터 연예인들의 떠들썩한 수다가 듣기 싫어 하릴없이 리모컨 버튼을 누르던 손가락이 KBS1 TV에서 멈췄다. 보신각의 타종으로 새해를 맞이하고 축하 연주로 클래식 음악을 들려주는 ‘클래식한’ 방송에서 익숙한 얼굴, 피아니스트 선우예권을 발견했기 때문이었다. 지난 여름, 금호아트홀의 상주음악가로 선정된 그와 인터뷰를 나눴던 터라 반가운 마음이 더욱 컸다. 그는 2017년 1월 1일의 첫 음악으로 예의 초롱초롱한 눈으로 리스트의 ‘피아노 협주곡 1번 내림마장조 S.124’를 연주하고, 미국 유학생활을 함께한 피아니스트 임동혁과 함께 한 피아노 앞에서 브람스의 ‘헝가리무곡 5번’을 들려줬다. 적당히 조용하면서도 적당히 흥겨운 연주는 다가올 한 해에 대한 희망적인 예감을 품게 만들었고, 좋은 음악을 선물해준 청년 피아니스트에게도 좋은 해가 되기를 잠시나마 기원했더랬다. 그 찰나의 응원이 효과가 있었는지는 모르겠지만, 어쨌든 2017년은 선우예권에게 잊을 수 없는 해가 되었다. 그는 피아노 분야에서 최고의 권위를 자랑하는 반 클라이번 국제 콩쿠르 우승을 거머쥐었고, 단숨에 동시에 세계 클래식씬의 주목을 받게 되었으니까. 이 기념비적인 한 해를 보낸 그와 마주 앉아, 다시 1년 전 새해 첫 연주 이야기를 꺼냈다. “하하. 기억 나요. 보통은 12월 31일에 제야연주회를 하고 동료 연주자들과 시간을 보내면서 새해를 맞는 경우가 많은데, 1월 1일 새벽부터 연주를 하는 건 처음이었기 때문에 저로서도 뜻 깊은 자리였거든요.” 그는 사실 당시에도 이미 머리 속은 반 클라이번 콩쿠르에 대한 생각으로 가득 차있었다고 말했다. 앞서 지원한 콩쿠르의 첫 라이브 오디션을 1월 중순에 앞두고 있었기 때문이다. “모든 신경이 콩쿠르에 쏠려 있었어요. 2017년에 제 모든걸 반 클라이번에 쏟아 붓겠다고 다짐했을 정도로요.”

지난해 미국 반 클라이번 국제 콩쿠르에서 우승한 후, 샴페인이 찍힌 사진 한 장을 받았다. “지금 같이 마실 수 없으니, 나 혼자라도 축배를 들고 있다”는 메시지도 함께 왔다. 내게 축하를 전하기 위해 혼자서라도 샴페인을 마셨다는 분은 2016년 10월부터 독일 하노버 국립음대에서 내가 사사하고 있는 베른트 괴츠케(67) 선생님이다. 콩쿠르 예선 때부터 인터넷 생중계로 내 연주를 챙겨보며 아낌없는 응원을 보내셨던 분이다. 반 클라이번 우승도, 이 분을 만나지 않았다면 어려웠을 거라는 생각이 든다. 그로부터 음악을 대하는 진중한 태도를 배웠다. 음악의 전체적인 흐름을 읽고 큰 그림을 그릴 수 있게 도움을 주셨다. 선생님과 함께 한 시간은 1년 밖에 되지 않지만, 내 연주에 큰 의미를 지닌 분이다.

Sunwoo Yekwon talks about his music, liking for solitude

Surely, artists should be allowed to be particular, sensitive; after all, we shouldn’t expect them to create extraordinary art while being ordinary. But Sunwoo is no diva. “I know the efforts of the staff that go into creating an optimal condition. So, while I am sensitive about my own performance, I am more relaxed about the situation surrounding the performance,” Sunwoo said.
Sunwoo began learning the piano at 8 years old, tagging along with his sisters to a neighborhood piano hagwon, or private piano school, where a teacher spotted his talent and encouraged him to pursue music.
He attended the Yewon School, an arts middle school, and left Korea to attend the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, the US, during his first year at Seoul Arts School, to study with Seymour Lipkin, with whom he would continue to study with for six years and from whom he learned to think about the composers’ intentions. Since then, he has earned his master’s at The Julliard School and artist diploma at the Mannes School of Music. Currently, he studies in Hannover, Germany.
Timid and shy as a youngster, Sunwoo was anxious about the language problem but otherwise embraced the opportunity to study in a different country, just as he enjoys his nomadic life today, performing in concert halls around the world.
He had more than 100 engagements last season, but the travels don’t tire him, he said. On the day of a performance, Sunwoo runs through the recital program, and if it is an evening concert, takes a 20-30 minute nap in the afternoon. “Right before going on stage, I apply hand cream, leaving out the finger tips, because my hands are very dry,” he said.

Keynote Artist Management announces today that Yekwon will join the firm’s roster for worldwide general management, effective immediately.
In June 2017, Yekwon was named the gold medalist of the Fifteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, at 28 years of age. In addition to cash and other prizes, he received three years of guaranteed comprehensive career management from the Cliburn, including mentorship and international concert bookings from the London-based Keynote Artist Management. Keynote manager Claudia Clarkson was immediately struck by Mr. Sunwoo’s charisma and authority at the keyboard when she heard him in Fort Worth during the Competition, which, in part, led to this offer of worldwide management just 6 months after his win.
Mr. Sunwoo’s Decca Gold album, Cliburn Gold 2017, reached #1 on the Billboard’s Traditional Classical Chart its first week of release in August. The selections are hand picked from over four hours of Yekwon’s performances at the competition and include the new commissioned work by jury member Marc-André Hamelin, Toccata on L’homme armé, which is based on a French secular song from the Renaissance period.

Every four years, the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition convenes the most promising rising star pianists from around the world for 17 days of intense competition. Established in 1962, the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition is widely recognized as “one of the world’s highest-visibility classical music contests.” Winners are chosen by an esteemed panel of judges and awarded significant cash prizes, as well as three years of comprehensive career management and concert tours. South Korean Pianist Wins the Van Cliburn Competition

Yekwon Sunwoo won the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition on Saturday, besting 29 rivals over two weeks of playing to become the prestigious contest’s first champion from South Korea. The Cliburn, held every four years in Fort Worth, was founded in 1962 by Van Cliburn, the American pianist who stunned the world by winning the Tchaikovsky competition in Moscow in 1958, at the height of the Cold War.
Mr. Sunwoo, 28, played Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in the final round, when each of the six remaining contestants performed first with a string quartet and then with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. The critic Scott Cantrell wrote in The Dallas Morning News that Mr. Sunwoo “tended to rush faster music, a common problem among other competitors — but he demonstrated a real, if not reliably mature, musical personality.”
Two Americans — Kenneth Broberg, 23, from Minneapolis, and Daniel Hsu, 19, of San Francisco — finished in second and third place.
